Overview

Ankle Sprain
Ankle sprain is an injury in which one or more ligaments supporting the ankle are stretched or torn. It commonly occurs when the foot twists inward, producing an inversion injury that affects the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle. Sprains range from mild stretching to complete ligament tears. Typical symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and difficulty bearing weight. Recovery varies with severity, and some severe injuries may require immobilization or further treatment.
Acromegaly
Acromegaly is a hormonal disorder in adults caused by excessive production of growth hormone, usually from a benign pituitary tumor. The excess hormone increases insulin-like growth factor 1, leading over time to enlargement of bones and soft tissues and potentially causing changes in appearance, joint problems, headaches, and other health complications.

Diagnosis

Ankle Sprain
Diagnosis is usually based on the injury mechanism, symptoms, and physical examination. The clinician checks swelling, bruising, tenderness, range of motion, joint stability, and the ability to bear weight. X-rays may be needed when a fracture is suspected. MRI or other imaging may be considered when a significant ligament injury, persistent symptoms, or another structural problem is suspected. The severity of the sprain is assessed to guide protection, rehabilitation, and return to activity.
Acromegaly
Acromegaly is diagnosed by evaluating growth hormone activity and related hormone levels. An IGF-1 blood test is commonly used because it reflects growth hormone activity over time. A growth hormone suppression test may be used to confirm excessive growth hormone production. Imaging, particularly MRI of the pituitary gland, can help identify a pituitary tumor when one is suspected.

Prevention

Ankle Sprain
Proper footwear and gradual conditioning can reduce the likelihood of ankle sprains. Warming up before sports, strengthening the muscles around the ankle, and improving balance and coordination can improve joint control. Activities should be increased progressively rather than suddenly. After an ankle injury, completing rehabilitation and restoring strength and stability before returning to demanding sports can reduce recurrence. People with repeated sprains may benefit from additional support such as bracing when recommended by a healthcare professional.
Acromegaly
Acromegaly cannot usually be prevented because it is most often caused by a benign pituitary tumor that develops without a known preventable cause. Early recognition and treatment can help reduce complications. People with symptoms such as enlargement of the hands or feet, changes in facial features, excessive sweating, or headaches should seek medical evaluation.

Risk Factors

Ankle Sprain
Risk factors include sports and activities involving running, jumping, rapid changes of direction, or uneven surfaces. Previous ankle sprains can increase the risk of another injury when strength and stability have not fully recovered. Poorly fitting footwear, inadequate conditioning, and returning to demanding activity before rehabilitation is complete may also increase risk. Reduced ankle strength, balance, or flexibility can make it harder to control the joint during sudden movements.
Acromegaly
Most cases of acromegaly occur sporadically, so there are few established preventable risk factors. A family history of certain rare genetic conditions can increase susceptibility to pituitary tumors or excessive growth hormone production. Some inherited syndromes, including multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 and related disorders, are associated with an increased risk. The condition can occur in adults of either sex and is usually diagnosed in middle age.
