Overview
Angina
Angina is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood. It is most often related to narrowing of the coronary arteries, but can also occur because of coronary artery spasm or other conditions affecting blood flow. Symptoms may be triggered by physical activity, emotional stress, cold temperatures, or heavy meals.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that becomes more common with aging. An enlarged prostate can press on the urethra and interfere with the normal flow of urine. Symptoms may include difficulty starting urination, a weak or interrupted stream, frequent or urgent urination, nighttime urination, and a feeling that the bladder has not emptied completely.

Diagnosis
Angina
Diagnosis of angina begins with assessment of chest symptoms, medical history, and cardiovascular risk factors. An ECG may be performed to evaluate the heart’s electrical activity. Depending on the symptoms and suspected cause, additional tests may include exercise or other stress testing, echocardiography, blood tests, CT-based evaluation, or coronary angiography to assess blood flow and the coronary arteries.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Diagnosis is based on urinary symptoms, medical history, and physical examination, including a digital rectal examination when appropriate. Urinalysis can help exclude infection or other causes of urinary symptoms. Depending on the situation, tests may include prostate-specific antigen measurement, urinary flow testing, measurement of urine remaining after urination, or imaging of the prostate and urinary tract.
Prevention
Angina
Reducing cardiovascular risk factors can help lower the likelihood of angina caused by coronary artery disease. Do not smoke, maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly as medically appropriate, and follow a heart-healthy eating pattern. Control high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol with lifestyle measures and prescribed treatment. Regular medical care can help identify and manage cardiovascular risk factors.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
There is no guaranteed way to prevent benign prostatic hyperplasia because prostate enlargement is strongly related to aging. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, managing diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors, and limiting excessive fluid intake before bedtime may help reduce urinary symptoms. People with persistent or worsening urinary symptoms should be evaluated so that other causes can be excluded and appropriate treatment considered.
Risk Factors
Angina
Risk factors for angina include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, increasing age, and a family history of cardiovascular disease. Conditions that narrow or affect the coronary arteries can reduce blood flow to the heart. Physical inactivity and other factors associated with cardiovascular disease may also increase the likelihood of developing symptoms related to reduced blood supply to the heart muscle.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
The main risk factor for benign prostatic hyperplasia is increasing age. A family history of the condition may increase susceptibility. Metabolic conditions such as obesity and diabetes have been associated with urinary symptoms and prostate enlargement. Cardiovascular disease and physical inactivity may also be associated with increased risk. Symptoms generally become more common as men grow older.
