Overview
Adrenal Adenoma
An adrenal adenoma is a usually benign growth that develops in one of the adrenal glands. Many adrenal adenomas do not cause symptoms and are discovered during imaging performed for another reason. Some adenomas produce hormones, which can lead to conditions such as excess cortisol or aldosterone and related symptoms such as high blood pressure or metabolic changes.
Gastroenteritis
Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the stomach and intestines that commonly causes diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and sometimes fever. It is often caused by an infection and may spread easily from person to person or through contaminated food and water. Most uncomplicated cases improve with supportive care, although severe dehydration can require medical attention.

InfectionDiagnosis
Adrenal Adenoma
An adrenal adenoma may be discovered incidentally during CT or MRI performed for another medical reason. Evaluation may include imaging to determine the size and appearance of the mass and blood or urine tests to determine whether it produces hormones. Additional endocrine testing is selected according to symptoms and suspected hormone excess.
Gastroenteritis
Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms, medical history, recent food or water exposure, travel, and physical examination. Most mild cases do not require extensive testing. Stool testing may be recommended when diarrhea is severe or persistent, blood is present, an outbreak is suspected, or a specific bacterial or parasitic infection needs to be identified. Tests may also be used when dehydration or another illness is suspected.
Prevention
Adrenal Adenoma
There is no established lifestyle method for preventing adrenal adenomas. People with known genetic conditions associated with adrenal tumors may require appropriate medical surveillance. When an adrenal mass is discovered, evaluation of its size, appearance, and hormone production can help identify tumors that require closer monitoring or treatment. Follow-up should be based on clinical advice.
Gastroenteritis
Careful handwashing with soap and water, safe food preparation, proper food storage, and drinking safe water can reduce the risk of infectious gastroenteritis. Avoid sharing food or utensils with people who are ill and clean surfaces contaminated by vomit or stool. People who are sick should avoid preparing food for others until the recommended recovery period has passed. Vaccination can prevent some causes, such as rotavirus infection in children.
Risk Factors
Adrenal Adenoma
Risk depends on the type of adrenal adenoma and whether it produces hormones. Some benign adrenal tumors are associated with genetic syndromes, while others occur without an identifiable risk factor. Hormone-producing adenomas may be detected because of high blood pressure, abnormal potassium levels, Cushing syndrome, or another hormonal problem.
Gastroenteritis
Risk increases with exposure to contaminated food or water, inadequate hand hygiene, close contact with an infected person, and poor sanitation. Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may be more vulnerable to complications such as dehydration. Travel to areas with unsafe water or food handling practices can also increase exposure to infectious causes.
