Overview

Adrenal Adenoma
An adrenal adenoma is a usually benign growth that develops in one of the adrenal glands. Many adrenal adenomas do not cause symptoms and are discovered during imaging performed for another reason. Some adenomas produce hormones, which can lead to conditions such as excess cortisol or aldosterone and related symptoms such as high blood pressure or metabolic changes.
Adjustment Disorder
Adjustment disorder is a stress-related condition in which emotional or physical symptoms develop after a significant stressful life event. Symptoms may include anxiety, sadness, hopelessness, irritability, nervousness, withdrawal, or physical complaints. The reaction is more severe than would normally be expected and can interfere with work, school, relationships, or everyday functioning. Symptoms commonly begin within several months of the stressful event and often improve when the stressor is resolved and appropriate support is provided.

Diagnosis

Adrenal Adenoma
An adrenal adenoma may be discovered incidentally during CT or MRI performed for another medical reason. Evaluation may include imaging to determine the size and appearance of the mass and blood or urine tests to determine whether it produces hormones. Additional endocrine testing is selected according to symptoms and suspected hormone excess.
Adjustment Disorder
Diagnosis is based primarily on the relationship between the stressful event and the symptoms. A clinician considers when symptoms began, how severe they are, how they affect daily functioning, and whether another mental or medical disorder better explains them. Adjustment disorder generally involves symptoms that occur after an identifiable stressor and are more intense than expected. The clinician also considers whether the reaction represents normal grief or another established mental health condition.

Prevention

Adrenal Adenoma
There is no established lifestyle method for preventing adrenal adenomas. People with known genetic conditions associated with adrenal tumors may require appropriate medical surveillance. When an adrenal mass is discovered, evaluation of its size, appearance, and hormone production can help identify tumors that require closer monitoring or treatment. Follow-up should be based on clinical advice.
Adjustment Disorder
Adjustment disorder cannot always be prevented because stressful events are part of life. Developing healthy coping strategies, maintaining supportive relationships, addressing problems early, and seeking help after a major stressful event may reduce the risk of prolonged distress. Adequate sleep, regular physical activity, and structured daily routines can support overall resilience. When symptoms significantly interfere with daily life, early professional support can help prevent worsening and identify other conditions that may require treatment.

Risk Factors

Adrenal Adenoma
Risk depends on the type of adrenal adenoma and whether it produces hormones. Some benign adrenal tumors are associated with genetic syndromes, while others occur without an identifiable risk factor. Hormone-producing adenomas may be detected because of high blood pressure, abnormal potassium levels, Cushing syndrome, or another hormonal problem.
Adjustment Disorder
There is no single factor that predicts who will develop adjustment disorder after a stressful event. Risk may be influenced by previous experiences with stress, coping strategies, social support, family or relationship difficulties, and the severity or persistence of the stressor. Children, adolescents, and adults can all develop the condition, although the types of stressors may differ by age. A history of mental health difficulties may also influence how a person responds to major stress.
