Overview
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition involving persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning. Symptoms can affect school, work, relationships, organization, and time management. ADHD commonly begins during childhood, although some people are diagnosed later when demands increase or symptoms become more noticeable.
Rickets
Rickets is a disorder of growing bones in children caused by inadequate mineralization of developing bone. Vitamin D deficiency is a common cause, although inadequate calcium or phosphate and disorders affecting their absorption or metabolism can also contribute. Rickets may cause bone pain, weakness, growth problems, and skeletal deformities.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Diagnosis of ADHD involves a comprehensive assessment rather than a single laboratory or imaging test. A clinician considers the pattern, duration, severity, and impact of symptoms and determines whether they occur in more than one setting. Information from the individual, family members, teachers, or other relevant observers may be useful, especially for children. The assessment also considers alternative explanations and coexisting conditions.
Rickets
Diagnosis is based on clinical findings together with laboratory and imaging studies. Blood tests may measure vitamin D, calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, and other markers of mineral metabolism. X-rays can show characteristic changes in affected bones. Additional testing may be needed when an inherited disorder, kidney problem, malabsorption condition, or another underlying cause is suspected.
Prevention
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
There is no established way to completely prevent ADHD because genetic and developmental factors play important roles. Supporting healthy pregnancy and early childhood development and reducing avoidable prenatal risks are generally beneficial for child health. Early recognition of persistent difficulties can allow appropriate educational, behavioral, and clinical support. Establishing predictable routines, sleep habits, organizational strategies, and supportive environments can help reduce functional difficulties.
Rickets
Adequate vitamin D, calcium, and overall nutrition during childhood help support normal bone mineralization. Children should receive appropriate nutrition and vitamin D according to age and medical guidance. Children at increased risk because of malabsorption, limited dietary intake, or other medical conditions may need supplementation and monitoring under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Risk Factors
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Risk factors and associated features include a family history of ADHD, childhood developmental differences, and certain prenatal or early-life factors. Symptoms may become more noticeable when academic, occupational, or organizational demands increase. Coexisting learning, behavioral, emotional, or sleep difficulties can complicate the presentation. Having one risk factor does not mean that a person will develop ADHD, and the condition can occur without an obvious identifiable risk factor.
Rickets
Risk factors include inadequate dietary vitamin D or calcium, limited sunlight exposure, poor nutrition, malabsorption disorders, darker skin pigmentation in settings with limited vitamin D availability, certain medicines, and medical conditions affecting the liver, kidneys, or mineral metabolism. Infants and children with inadequate nutrition are particularly vulnerable.
